Rat and Ox Compatibility

Rat carries the Zi branch and the yang Water element; Ox carries the Chou branch and yin Earth. In the twelve-branch system the two are read as a Six Harmonies (liu he) pairing — one of six fixed combinations traditionally singled out as favorable — and they are also two of the three branches making up the Pig-Rat-Ox water directional trio, completed by the Pig. Rat is traditionally described as quick-witted and resourceful, good at spotting an opening, while Ox is often described as steady and diligent, valuing routine over improvisation; old sayings suggest the two styles complement rather than compete, with Rat scouting the path and Ox holding the ground.
