Rat and Dragon Compatibility

Rat carries the Zi branch and yang Water; Dragon carries the Chen branch and yang Earth. Together with the Monkey's Shen branch, Zi and Chen make up the Three Harmonies (san he) water trine — one of the six formal branch relations, and traditionally read as an especially cooperative grouping. Classical five-element texts add a further layer: Chen is called the vault of Water, the branch where Water's energy is said to gather and store, which is why Dragon is traditionally linked to Rat's own element even without a third-party Monkey present to complete the full trio.

The three branches of the Monkey-Rat-Dragon water trine each mark a stage in Water's rise and fall: Shen is where it is born, Zi is its peak, called di wang, and Chen is its vault, where it settles and stores. Rat's Zi sits at that peak, and Dragon's Chen is the vault where the same Water element quietly comes to rest — a hinge point linking the trine's most active stage to its most contained one.

Rat is traditionally described as quick-witted and resourceful, always alert to an opening, while Dragon is often painted as confident and charismatic, comfortable taking the lead and drawing attention. Old sayings describe the two as natural collaborators on a shared plan — Rat spotting the opportunity, Dragon supplying the nerve to act on it — rather than rivals competing for the same spotlight.
